Ocean Gardens retirement village saga at an end
1/4/04
Legislation to increase local government representation on the board of the Ocean Gardens Retirement Village in City Beach has now passed through both houses of State Parliament.
Local Government Minister Tom Stephens said the Ocean Gardens (Inc) Bill 2004 implemented the recommendations of an inquiry by the State Ombudsman into changes made in 1995 to the constitution of Ocean Gardens (Inc).
"This legislation will not affect the property rights of Ocean Gardens residents, but it will restore an appropriate level of public accountability to the operation of the board," Mr Stephens said.
"It restores the Town of Cambridge to the same position on the Ocean Gardens Board that the City of Perth held, before the constitution was amended in 1995, at the time Perth was restructured and Cambridge created."
Mr Stephens said there had been extensive discussions between the Department of Local Government and Regional Development, the Town of Cambridge and the Board of Ocean Gardens (Inc) since the Ombudsman's recommendations were released early in 2002.
The Minister said the legislation was necessary because the board of Ocean Gardens (Inc) had refused to achieve a similar result by amending its current constitution.
