One million-dollar bonus payout
20/2/03
Racing, pacing and chasing clubs in Western Australia are to receive a share of a $1million bonus payout to be distributed by the TAB this month.
Racing and Gaming Minister Nick Griffiths said today the extra payment was made possible due to the TAB's outstanding performance in the first half of the 2002-03 season.
"The TAB has lifted turnover by $39.7million or seven per cent in the first six months of the season, with increases spread through all codes," Mr Griffiths said.
"Betting on thoroughbreds rose by $12.4million; trotting was up $10.1million and greyhound turnover rose by $13.3million. Turnover also increased by $3.9million on fixed odds, sport and Favourite Numbers betting.
"The TAB operated on 2,860 meetings (44 more than last year) and the total holding was $502.7million, compared with $463million for the same period in the 2001-02 season."
Mr Griffiths said the TAB deserved the industry's praise for its first-half result.
"It is well on target to set a new high for WA off-course turnover and to also distribute a record amount to the racing industry for the season which ends on July 31," he said.
