Opposition has poor track record on rail promises: Minister
13/10/04
The Opposition's pledge to build a permanent rail station at Arena Joondalup has no credibility given the previous Coalition Government's failure to deliver other promised projects such as the Clarkson and Greenwood stations.
"When it comes to public transport commitments, the Opposition has no credibility," Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said.
"If the Coalition's failure to build the Clarkson and Greenwood stations is any indication, today's promise will never be delivered.
"Since 1996 the Coalition had promised to build a station at Greenwood and the Clarkson extension."
A fortnight ago, the Gallop Government officially opened the Clarkson Station - heralding the completion of the $136million first stage of the $1.518billion New MetroRail Project.
Under the Gallop Government, construction of the Greenwood Station is well underway and will be completed by the end of the year.
"It was a Labor Government that delivered the Northern Suburbs Railway in the early 1990s - a railway that was opposed by the Coalition," the Minister said.
"It is the Gallop Labor Government that has delivered the railway to Clarkson - the first extension of our railway after eight years of neglect by the previous Coalition Government.
"And it is a Gallop Labor Government that will deliver the Greenwood Station in the near future.
"In the meantime, I am more than happy to put our record of providing essential public transport infrastructure against the hollow promises of the Opposition any day."
The State Government has committed to a Special Events Station at Arena Joondalup.
