Options for the future use of the Swan Valley Reserve were today presented in a report to Indigenous Affairs Minister John Kobelke.
Site administrator Barry Jameson has provided a number of options including:

  • a multi-purpose centre catering for Aboriginal youth;
  • an Aboriginal aged care facility; and
  • a post-operative recuperation centre/palliative care unit.
Mr Jameson also recommended that the Minister consult with the Nyungar community to determine the community's attitude for the future use of the reserve.
Mr Kobelke welcomed the report and said the recommendations would be given serious consideration in consultation with the Nyungar community.
"My first step will be to consult broadly with respect to the administrator's recommendations," he said.
"Prior to the release of the report, I want to discuss the sensitive matters raised confidentially in the report with indigenous representatives.
"A final proposal will be then presented to Cabinet for approval.
"Whatever the future use of the reserve will be, the Gallop Government will ensure the site remains for the use and benefit of Aboriginal people.
"The Government's clear objective is to convert a place of misery closed to all but a few into a place where Aboriginal heritage and culture can be celebrated by the wider Nyungar community."
The Gallop Government closed the Swan Valley Nyungar Camp in June, due to ongoing concerns about the safety and welfare of women and children within the community.
