Outback founder welcomed
10/5/02
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens tonight paid tribute to the man behind Australia's Year of the Outback celebrations.
In welcoming Bruce Campbell MBE on an official visit to Western Australia, Mr Stephens said the Queensland-based founder of the program deserved credit for devising a creative and engaging way of generating interest in rural and regional Australia.
"Bruce Campbell's concept is such a positive way of saying to all Australians and to international visitors that immersing themselves in the culture and lifestyles of the bush will always give them a buzz," the Minister said.
The Year of the Outback is showcasing the country through a year-long series of events, activities, tourism experiences and enduring projects.
Mr Stephens said pastoralist, life-saver and rural industry leader Bruce Campbell was a man whose appreciation of people and great love of his country and its 'unlimited potential' had seen him live his life fulfilling both passions.
Mr Stephens is the Minister responsible for Western Australia's Year of the Outback program.
Mr Campbell hosted a reception in Perth for a string of goodwill Outback 'ambassadors' dedicated to promoting the values, communities, industries, beauty and history of rural Australia.
