PHENOMENA' to showcase work of Howard Taylor
5/2/04
The work of noted Western Australian contemporary artist, the late Howard Taylor, will be the first of a series of Art Gallery of WA exhibitions showcasing local artists helping to commemorate the State's 175th anniversary.
The exhibition, Howard Taylor PHENOMENA, represents a 50-year journey through the work of the artist and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and a series of models.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale last night opened the exhibition praising it as a rare opportunity to see the breadth of Howard Taylor's contribution to Australian contemporary art and perceptions of the land.
"Howard Taylor's way of seeing and depicting our Western Australian landscape is truly original and this will be the first major exhibition of his work since 1985," Ms McHale said.
"This exhibition provides us all with a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the South-West and to celebrate the life work of one of the State's artistic treasures."
The exhibition is a joint initiative of the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and will be the Gallery's major contribution to the Perth International Arts Festival 2004.
It will be on show from February 5 to May 16 2004 with free entry courtesy of supporter Wesfarmers Limited.
It will later tour regionally to Geraldton and Bunbury and later interstate to Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania
