Midland school children today presented Premier Geoff Gallop with a young grapevine to symbolise the new partnership agreement forged between the State Government and the City of Swan.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) - signed by Dr Gallop and Mayor Charlie Gregorini is designed to ensure the two spheres of Government work co-operatively at a strategic level to achieve sustainable outcomes for the region.
"Today heralds a new era of moving towards our shared goal which is to recognise and build upon the economic, social and environmental values inherent in this region," Dr Gallop said.
"The City of Swan is the largest and one of the most diverse local government areas in metropolitan Perth, so many sustainability challenges exist here.
"The MOU we have signed today will provide the framework for State Government agencies and the City of Swan to focus their energies and ensure these challenges are addressed."
Dr Gallop commended Swan Hills MLA Jaye Radisich for her work in co-chairing the working group which established the MOU.
"Jaye understands the issues and challenges which must be faced here and she will continue to play an important role in this long-term process," he said.
Ms Radisich said her goal would be to ensure that the new partnership agreement delivered real benefits to the people of Swan.
"At the end of the day it is all about building strong communities and improving people's quality of life," she said.
