Peel to host Perth Glory pre-season warm-up against Singapore

National Soccer League champions Perth Glory will play two pre-season matches against the Singapore national soccer team in Peel later this month.
Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera today announced the games would be played in Waroona on Thursday, August 28 and Mandurah on Saturday, August 30.
The games were made possible through a $27,000 grant from the State Government's Country Sport Enrichment Scheme.
"The Gallop Government recognises sport and recreation are essential parts of the Western Australian way of life," Mr Kucera said.
"The tour will be a major sports spectacle for the Peel and a rare opportunity to demonstrate soccer as it is played at the highest level.
"It will also be the first time the Peel has hosted a Country Sport Enrichment Scheme event, which takes top class sporting events to regional WA.
"There is such strong local support that more than 50 schools within an hour's drive of Waroona have been invited to attend and local schools have been asked to consider closing early so that students can attend the game - to which admission is free."
Mr Kucera said the Shire of Waroona was arranging special presentations to the players and the City of Mandurah would host a civic reception.
"These two matches will give potential players in the Peel the encouragement they need to consider soccer as their sport of choice," he said.
"The State Government's support for Perth Glory's pre-season tour is a great investment in the future of sport in the Peel and an opportunity to provide professional development for sports officials and coaches from other sports."
Perth Glory chief executive Jeff Dennis said winning the National Soccer League had elevated soccer's profile throughout WA.
"I have no doubt there are young people in the Peel who dream of emulating players like Bobby Despotovski and Damian Mori and we will be doing all we can to help these dreams become a reality," Mr Dennis said.
