Permanent heritage listing for lighthouse

The Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Quarters have been permanently listed in the State Government's Register of Heritage Places.
Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards said the registration would provide permanent statutory protection and recognition of the contribution made by the place to the State's cultural history.
"The Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Quarters together with the topography of the Cape creates a visual landmark, especially from the ocean," Dr Edwards said.
"It is historically important in the consolidation of local industries, which relied on coastal shipping for transport, and forms part of an integrated system of costal lights developed by the various Australian colonies to improve the safety of shipping."
South-West MLC Adele Farina said the lighthouse also had scientific value for its Chance Brothers lens and optical equipment, which has operated in perfect working order since 1903.
"The place is highly valued as an important tourist destination and for its continuing role in the local maritime community," Ms Farina said.
"The 20m stone lighthouse and three keepers' quarters reflect the living conditions for lighthouse-keepers who occupied the place for nearly 100 years.
"It is a way of life that is no longer practised in Western Australia and one that is rapidly becoming scarce in both Australia and the rest of the world."
