Perth Oval redevelopment kicks off
10/7/03
A new era in Western Australian sport was ushered in today, with a sod-turning ceremony to mark the commencement of the redevelopment of Perth Oval into a multi-purpose rectangular sports stadium.
Premier Geoff Gallop, who took part in the ceremony with Town of Vincent Mayor Nick Catania, said the project was an excellent example of State and local governments working together.
Dr Gallop said the new stadium would be a state-of-the-art facility that would reinvigorate many sports in this State.
"The State Government recognises that sport and recreation and access to quality facilities are essential parts of the Western Australian way of life," he said.
"Western Australians love seeing their teams succeed on the national stage. However, for too long our competitiveness was hampered by the lack of a dedicated rectangular arena.
"The redevelopment of Perth Oval will ensure that sports such as soccer, rugby, rugby league and lacrosse will have a permanent base from which to grow."
The Premier said the project was a major plank in the Government's State Sporting Facilities Plan, which aimed to provide multi-use facilities that boosted grass roots development while also attracting major events.
"The redevelopment, which will accommodate 18,450 people in Stage One, will cost approximately $10.5million, of which the State Government is contributing $6.079million and the Town of Vincent $4.4million," he said.
The project will include the provision of grassed banks, concrete terraces and new seating, upgraded lighting, a refit of the existing grandstand, a complete upgrade of water, sewerage, electricity and stormwater disposal, and the creation of 30,000 square metres of public open space surrounding the stadium.
The grandstand refit will include a lift and facilities for people with disabilities, including ramps, accessible toilets, seating allocation with provision for carers, appropriate signage, new accessible pathways and new carparks with ACROD bays.
Dr Gallop said average spectators would be the big winner, being able to watch their sport in comfort, from excellent vantage points.
"The rectangular arena will foster an exciting atmosphere present in European stadiums while also ensuring that all the spectators are close to the action at all times," he said.
Dr Gallop thanked Mr Catania and the Town of Vincent for their commitment to bringing the project to fruition.
