Perth architecture showcased

A new book documenting the history of architecture in Perth will be launched today by Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens.
Mr Stephens said that Geoffrey London's 'A Short History of Perth Architecture' recognised the innovative designs of Perth architects and was an appraisal of past achievements.
"It is important to capture and record the historic value of our buildings for they can represent fundamental aspects of culture and national aspiration," he said.
"Geoffrey London has highlighted Perth architecture that reflects an inventiveness inspired by the city's growth in isolation from the rest of Australia.
"The photographic illustrations by Patrick Bingham-Hall feature 100 Perth buildings spread over the period from European settlement to the present day."
The Minister said the launch of the book was timely, since the State's architectural profession and the State Government were working together to promote 2004 as the Year of the Built Environment.
"The Year of the Built Environment will allow us to re-appraise what we have built in the past and plot an informed course into the future," he said.
"The proposal is aimed at fostering community debate regarding the nature and quality of the built environment and the legacy it wishes to leave for future generations."
