Perth teens set for action packed summer holidays
6/12/01
More than 95,000 Perth secondary school students will have more to do this summer than hit the beach.
Community Development Minister Sheila McHale today announced a new package of Government-funded school holiday programs over the summer holidays which begin on December 21.
The Department for Community Development has provided a total of $20,000 to 14 organisations to run youth development holiday programs for students from years 8 to 12.
"From skateboarding, BMX riding and hip hop dance workshops in Wanneroo, to a four-day camp in Bremer Bay on Aboriginal cultural identity, and an environment education trek through Wulunga National Park, these programs offer a fantastic range of activities," Ms McHale said.
She said the programs were designed to boost teenagers' self esteem and enhance their teamwork, leadership and social skills.
"You cannot go past recreational, cultural, artistic and sporting activities as ways to improve self-image," the Minister said.
"This Government is committed to giving our young people the skills and opportunities they need to build positive foundations for the future and experience success in the wider community."
