14/5/02
Premier Geoff Gallop has announced the appointment of Western Australia's new Commissioner for Public Sector Standards.
Dr Gallop said Maxine Murray would take up the appointment following the retirement of Don Saunders on May 22.
The Premier said Ms Murray had been the Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment since 1994, providing her with wide-ranging experience in the fields of merit and equity and in ensuring compliance with legislation.
"The Government welcomes Ms Murray's appointment," he said.
"She will bring to the role a tremendous understanding of the WA public sector.
"She enjoys the respect of those who have worked with her and I am confident that she will continue to provide valuable service to the Parliament and the people of WA."
The Premier said the commissioner's role was pivotal to the management of the public sector.
"As well as establishing Public Sector Standards in Human Resource Management and the Code of Ethics, the role is also responsible for the monitoring of compliance of public sector bodies with the general principles of human resource management and official conduct prescribed in the Public Sector Management Act 1994," he said.
"The commissioner also has a legislative role to play in the appointment of chief executive officers."
Dr Gallop said Mr Saunders was retiring after serving as commissioner for five years and after a total of 32 years in the public sector.
"Mr Saunders has carried out his role with distinction," he said.
"He has unwaveringly pursued the principles of good public sector management.
"On behalf of the Government and the Parliament I would like to thank him for his service to the community and wish him well in his retirement."
