8/1/05
Two young Western Australians have topped the class and have today been awarded the prestigious 2004 Beazley Medals for their brilliant performance and achievements in education and training.
Premier Geoff Gallop today announced that Lachlan Patterson of the WA College of Agriculture in Narrogin was the winner of the Beazley Medal for Vocational Education and Training (VET).
Carryn Vincec, of Perth College was the winner of the Beazley Medal: TEE.
Dr Gallop said the Beazley Medals represented the highest achievement in general and vocational education in the State.
"Both awards - in Tertiary Entrance Examinations subjects and in vocational education and training - embody the strengths and range of opportunities available in education in Western Australia," he said.
"My Government has a strong focus on providing young people with education and training options that are flexible, relevant and suit their needs.
"Our State has a great economic future ahead and we are ensuring our young people are given the best possible education and training opportunities."
The Premier said Beazley Medal: VET winner Lachlan Patterson had been educated at Braeside Primary School, in Katanning, Katanning Senior High School in Years 8-10 and the WA College of Agriculture - Narrogin, in Years 11 and 12.
"Lachlan concentrated on management and agriculture in his final two years of schooling and achieved A grades in every one of his Year 12 subjects," Dr Gallop said.
Lachlan's subjects included Mathematics in Practice, Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) - Generic, Senior English, Small Business Management and Marketing, Animal Production and Marketing, Plant Production and Marketing, and SWL - Primary Industry.

Carryn also achieved two Certificates of Distinction, in Calculus and Physics, and a Certificate of Excellence.
"I congratulate both Carryn and Lachlan on their outstanding individual performances," the Premier said.
Dr Gallop said all award winners and their families should be justifiably proud of the awards as they represented very high levels of achievement.
"The results are also indicative of the high quality of education, training and teaching in WA and I acknowledge and thank the efforts of WA's teachers," he said.
