Perth Oval began a new era this evening when Premier Geoff Gallop officially opened the redeveloped Members Equity Stadium.
The Premier said State Government, in partnership with the Town of Vincent, had transformed the former Perth Oval into the $11million rectangular Members Equity Stadium.
"Together we have invested in the future of sports that require a rectangular playing surface such as soccer, the rugby codes and lacrosse," Dr Gallop said.
"The result is a comfortable, modern and adaptable sporting and cultural facility."
The new ground has a capacity of 18,150 and features new function and viewing areas and tiered seating. A special family area will be created in the south-east corner overlooking the playing area.
The State Government contributed $6million towards the redevelopment with a further $4.5million from the Town of Vincent.
Allia Holdings, a subsidiary of Perth Glory, will manage the ground and will contribute $400,000 a year for 20 years and a further $80,000 a year into a reserve fund for oval repairs and maintenance.
"Along with the new stadium, the community will be able to enjoy newly created open spaces that will further enhance the lifestyles and experiences of residents and visitors alike," Dr Gallop said.
The Premier paid tribute to the board, players and members of East Perth Football Club, which relocated to Leederville Oval during 2003 with Subiaco Football Club.
"East Perth and Subiaco now have excellent clubroom and team facilities and I wish both teams all the best for the 2004 football season at their new home ground," he said.
Town of Vincent Mayor Nick Catania said that Perth Oval had a rich sporting heritage dating back more than a century.
"Generations of players and spectators have enjoyed spectacular sporting encounters over the years, and this is set to continue at Members Equity Stadium," Mr Catania said.
"The tradition will live on with different sports as the stadium becomes central to the sporting and cultural lives of Western Australians for many years to come."
