Premier Geoff Gallop has urged all Western Australians to work together to build a stronger and more caring community.
Launching the 2002 Smith Family Christmas Appeal today, Dr Gallop said this year's Appeal theme 'Every Australian is a member of your family' was appropriate and timely.
"Despite recent events that have introduced the shadow of terrorism, we must remember the philosophy of Christmas and the festive season," the Premier said.
"Christmas is about spiritual reflection, giving, sharing and spending time with loved ones.
"It should also be a time of tolerance and respect - of supporting each other regardless of race or culture."
Dr Gallop congratulated the work of The Smith Family, which is an independent organisation that has been assisting disadvantaged Australians for more than 80 years.
"The Smith Family's vision is for a more caring and cohesive family and its mission is to unlock opportunities for disadvantaged families," he said.
"The Government supports these goals and, earlier this year, committed $600,000 over four years to The Smith Family's Learning for Life program, which is improving educational outcomes for disadvantaged students through closer links with students' families."
The Premier said the funding would come from the State Government's $3.994million Family Links initiative, which was aimed at increasing the involvement of parents in their children's schooling.
"By working together, we can make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate and in doing so help to build a stronger, safer and more caring community for us all," he said.
"We all need to take collective responsibility for the communities in which we live, play, work and govern."
