26/3/03
Premier Geoff Gallop today used his visit to Geraldton and the Mid-West to officially open the Kalbarri Golf and Bowling Club's new clubhouse.
The State Government, through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, has contributed $228,833 towards the project.
The new 832m2 clubhouse, which overlooks the bowling green and the nine-hole golf course, includes a large function room, offices and kitchen.
The Premier said the State Government was committed to ensuring regional communities had access to high quality sport and recreation facilities.
"The town of Kalbarri is growing rapidly and has become one of the State's premier tourist destinations," he said.
"The new club house will be a valuable asset for local people and for the 175,000 visitors who come here every year."
Dr Gallop said the new clubhouse was a credit to the vision and drive of the members of the Kalbarri Golf and Bowling Club.
"This is a great example of what can be achieved in a small community with strong commitment and community support," he said.
The Premier acknowledged founding club members Alison and Bicky Glass and Betty and Albie Russell, to whom he presented life memberships.
"These people have played a vital role in the establishment and on-going success of the club," he said.
"They have also been a driving force behind the progress of Kalbarri from the days when it was an isolated, difficult-to-access fishing spot at the mouth of the Murchison River to its present status as a vital tourist and commercial fishing centre."
The Shire of Northampton contributed $180,000 in cash and $37,390 in labour and donated equipment towards the new clubhouse
