Premier Geoff Gallop today officially opened the new bus transitway on Gilmore Avenue, Kwinana.
Dr Gallop said the transitway, which runs between Wellard Road and Dalrymple Drive, would greatly improve traffic flow and traffic safety along Gilmore Avenue.
The transitway includes two new kerbside bus lanes, right turning lanes at all intersections and new pedestrian refuges.
"Gilmore Avenue is the main access road which links the Kwinana town centre with Rockingham," the Premier said.
"I am pleased to say the new transitway will greatly improve traffic safety and bus operations along this important section of road.
"The new bus lanes will provide a better run for Transperth buses and allow commuters to board and disembark from buses in safety.
"The new lanes will also enable drivers to turn safely at right-hand intersections, without any interruption to traffic flow."
Dr Gallop said the $800,000 project was a joint undertaking by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure, the Town of Kwinana and Main Roads WA.
"There has been an excellent level of co-operation between these agencies in bringing this project to fruition," he said.
"The kerbside bus lane concept has already proven successful on Hampton Road, in South Fremantle, with buses and cars moving far more smoothly.
"I am confident that these road works will deliver a similar level of success on Gilmore Avenue."
