Premier Geoff Gallop today in Geraldton presented a Lotteries Commission cheque for $200,000 to the HMAS Sydney Memorial Committee.
The Premier - who presented the cheque at the Mount Scott memorial site - said he was proud that the State Government grant would finance the completion of the memorial.
It will also ensure that the Mount Scott site is landscaped and reticulated.
"The HMAS Sydney Memorial will pay tribute to one of the most significant and tragic losses of human life in Australia's wartime history," Dr Gallop said.
"Here, atop Mount Scott, the memorial will forever mark the 645 crew members who lost their lives on November 19, 1941, when the Kormoran fired upon the HMAS Sydney.
"Hopefully, the friends and relatives of these brave naval men will at last be provided with a sense of closure."
Dr Gallop said he believed the national monument - which will be formally dedicated on November 18 - had the potential to become a major tourist attraction for Geraldton.
The Lotteries Commission grant for $200,000 comes on top of $40,000 provided earlier this year by the State Government and $75,000 provided last year by the previous Government.
