Premier Geoff Gallop today presented a cheque for $165,000 to the Pemberton Sports Club Inc as part of a total State Government commitment of $1.17million towards the building of the new multi-purpose sport and recreation centre in Pemberton.
Speaking in Pemberton, Dr Gallop said the $2.48million centre would be of benefit to the entire Shire of Manjimup and the State's funding rewarded significant fundraising work carried out by the local community.
"The new Pemberton Sports Club project is an example of what communities can achieve through determination and hard work," he said.
"With over 25 construction jobs and the ongoing employment of six full-time equivalent staff, the new sport and recreation centre will provide a significant boost to Pemberton.
"It will also provide the entire Manjimup Shire with new high-quality sporting facilities."
State Development Minister Clive Brown, who is also in the South-West with the Premier, said that as a part of the State Government's contribution to the new Pemberton Sports Club, the Government would purchase the existing Pemberton Sports Club facility and make it available for industry development purposes.
"The development of the new Pemberton Sports Club could be a double win for Pemberton," Mr Brown said.
"Not only will Pemberton get new, first-class sporting facilities, but premises will also become available that could facilitate a number of employment generating projects."
