Premier says Nedlands by-election to be held as quickly as possible

Premier Geoff Gallop said a by-election for the State seat of Nedlands would be called as soon as was practical following Richard Court's resignation from Parliament today.
Dr Gallop said he would consult other Government members before deciding on a by-election date.
He said Mr Court's decision to resign marked the end of an era for conservative politics in Western Australia.
"Richard Court deserves to be remembered as a successful Premier and party leader and he leaves Parliament with my respect and best wishes," the Premier said.
"While I have had many differences with Mr Court on matters of policy and politics in general, I have never doubted his commitment to Western Australia and its people."
