Premier urges Western Australians to observe minute's silence for Alec Campbell State Funeral
24/5/02
Premier Geoff Gallop has urged Western Australians to pay their respects to Australia's last Gallipoli veteran by observing a minute's silence at nine o'clock this morning.
Dr Gallop said the minute's silence would coincide with the State funeral in Hobart for Alec Campbell who died last week aged 103.
"As a mark of respect for Mr Campbell and for all of his generation who established the ANZAC tradition, flags are also being flown at half-mast today," Dr Gallop said.
"There are few legends more important in our nation's history than the ANZAC legend. One needs only to observe the growing crowds every year at ANZAC day ceremonies around the country to realise this.
"Mateship, bravery, sacrifice and a healthy disrespect for authority - these are the qualities we associate with the ANZACs and qualities we associate with Australia.
"I believe the half-masting of flags and one minute's silence is an appropriate way for all Western Australians to be involved and to pay their respects to Mr Campbell and his fellow ANZACs."
