Premier Geoff Gallop has urged city workers and visitors to wear the green and gold and turn out in force today to congratulate and welcome home Western Australian members of the Commonwealth Games Team.
A combined State Government and City of Perth reception has been organised for 12.30pm at Forrest Place in the city centre.
Dr Gallop said 22 athletes from Western Australia attended the games in Manchester, bringing home 24 medals in total, 15 of them gold. Overall, Australia won 206 medals.
"This is a great opportunity to say 'well done' to our athletes who performed so prominently at these games," the Premier said.
He said there had been some particularly outstanding performances by local athletes, with gymnasts Allana Slater of Mt Claremont winning two gold and two silver medals and Sarah Lauren of Floreat winning two golds.
Ryan Bayley of Alexander Heights did us proud in the cycling with two gold medals and High Wycombe is celebrating the success of local Caroline Pileggi with one gold and two silver in weightlifting.
"But it's not just about the medals, it's also about telling those who went and who did well but didn't bring home a medal, how much we value their contribution, their skill and strength of commitment to achieving excellence," Dr Gallop said.
