Principal of the Year
21/3/02
Balga Senior High School head Merv Hammond has been named Western Australia's Principal of the Year.
The innovative principal of one of WA's most challenging high schools was today recognised for his contribution to education in the State-wide Rotary Principal of the Year Award.
He was presented with the prestigious award by Education Minister Alan Carpenter at a breakfast ceremony in Perth this morning.
Mr Carpenter said in the seven years since Mr Hammond arrived at Balga Senior High School, the school had been renewed, revitalized and reshaped.
"Mr Hammond and his school community have changed things to suit Balga students in ways never before possible," he said.
"In a brave move, the tertiary entrance curriculum has been removed from the school because classes were too small to be viable and the needs of nearly all students were vocational.
"The introduction of pastoral care philosophies have seen significant improvements in attendance figures and consequent falls in absenteeism and truancy.
"The school has established the Breakfast Club - with free breakfast for under-privileged students - and has specialised soccer, drama and dance programs.
"The creation of a childcare centre for teenage mothers of school-age children has attracted attention across the country.
"Mr Hammond's nomination papers talk about his incredible dedication to bringing out the best in his students by encouraging and being supportive of staff and involving the school community heavily in school activities."
Principals from Government primary and secondary schools around the State are nominated for the awards by their school community because of their outstanding leadership and dedication to the education of their students.
The five other finalists were: Eden Hill Primary School Principal John Alford, Beechboro Primary School Principal Len Christie, Middle Swan Primary School Principal Kim Dullard, Merredin Senior High School Principal Alison Woodman and Hamilton Senior High School Principal Lee Moore.
Mr Carpenter said the awards, established by the Rotary Club of Heirisson 10 years ago and sponsored by the Home Building Society, raised awareness of the professionalism and leadership of WA's Government school principals.
"The Rotary Principal of the Year Award gives parents, children and staff the chance to show their appreciation in a public way," he said.
Heirisson Rotary Club President Colin Gilbert said the honours gave a huge boost to the recipients.
"Previous winners have said what a difference it makes to them to win the award," Mr Gilbert said.
"It's a very special thing to be thanked by parents and staff for your work."
Mr Hammond receives a plaque and a holiday at a South-West Resort.
