Racing and Gaming Minister Nick Griffiths said today that the Western Australian Government would support moves to ban the cloning of racehorses.
The decision comes after Clone International announced plans to clone former harness racing champion Gammalite.
Mr Griffiths said that the cloning of horses is against the spirit of racing and would destroy the integrity of the industry.
"Cloning racehorses would be a terrible move for the industry," Mr Griffiths said.
"The best things about racing are its competitive nature and unpredictability of results. Cloning a champion racehorse could remove the uncertainty and destroy the enjoyment of the game."
Mr Griffiths was representing the State Government at the Australasian Racing Ministers Conference in Melbourne. He returns to Perth on Sunday.
