The new trotting track at Donaldson Park in Bunbury was officially opened today, following $1.3million worth of construction of new facilities at the venue.
Racing and Gaming Minister Nick Griffiths said the new track was now the second largest in Western Australia.
"The new track and other facilities will provide a renewed focus for trotting in the South-West region," Mr Griffiths said.
"The development of Donaldson Park will provide industry participants with a world-class track that rivals some of the best in Australia.
"It will help ensure the continued growth of harness racing in the Bunbury region."
Mr Griffiths encouraged local people and visitors from other parts of the region to enjoy once again the spirit and excitement of harness racing.
"Trotting is an excellent family occasion," he said.
"I hope the new track will restore confidence in the industry and renew local interest in trotting.
"The project involved the construction of a new 960m track and new stabling, fencing and parade area.
"The new facilities will mean that the local club is now in a position to start attracting quality horses and drivers from all across WA."
Mr Griffiths congratulated the Bunbury Trotting Club and other supporters of the project. He praised the industry for coming together to ensure the project had the funding to go ahead.
"The project has the support of both the WA Trotting Association (WATA) and the WA Country Trotting Association (WACTA)," the Minister said.
"The involvement from around the industry has been crucial to the success of this project. It is excellent to see the different arms of the industry working together."
