Redevelopment of Lady Lawley Cottage provides home-style accommodation
29/5/03
The redevelopment of Lady Lawley Cottage in Cottesloe will allow children with disabilities to be cared for in an atmosphere more closely resembling a family home than has been previously possible with this long-serving disability agency.
Disability Services Minister Sheila McHale said the redevelopment of Lady Lawley Cottage by the Sea reflected the service's commitment to growing and adapting to meet the needs of children with disabilities and their families and carers.
"Lady Lawley Cottage offers a unique and important service and has, over the course of its history, decades of experience in managing the care of children with very complex needs," Ms McHale said.
"Lady Lawley Cottage continually aims to provide a high standard of support, which enables families and carers to have a break, confident in the knowledge that their child is in a safe, caring and family-type atmosphere."
The Minister said the redevelopment comprised three units to provide a homestyle environment for children, one of which was a high dependency unit, allowing Lady Lawley Cottage to provide support for children who needed ongoing technical support, such as ventilators.
In addition, the cottage now has a purpose-built sensory room, a soft play area and a craft room.
"The State Government has contributed a capital grant of $1million with further transition costs of $90,000 provided through the Disability Services Commission," Ms McHale said.
"This funding is in addition to the $1.7million already provided by the Disability Services Commission each year to support this vital service."
The Minister said the redevelopment was testament to the hard work and dedication of the many people involved in the project.
