Redevelopment puts Port Hedland in the swim

Residents of Port Hedland now have access to state-of-the-art recreational facilities, thanks to the redevelopment of the 35-year-old Gratwick Memorial Swimming Pool.
Officially opening the new centre, Premier Geoff Gallop congratulated the Town of Port Hedland for its commitment towards providing quality recreational infrastructure.
The $1.8million redevelopment included new pipe work and pool surrounds, a meeting room for sports clubs and, most importantly, a disabled access ramp into the pool.
The State Government contributed more than $344,000 from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), towards the construction costs of both this project and the redevelopment of the South Hedland Aquatic Centre.
"The redeveloped pool will now provide a whole new range of leisure options and will make physical activity more enjoyable and accessible for the people of this region," Dr Gallop said.
"In harsh climates, well maintained regional public swimming pools are of vital importance in not only promoting exercise, but also enhancing the quality of life of residents.
"It has been proven that their presence makes an enormous contribution to improving health, reducing crime rates, developing young people and providing a social focus for communities."
The Premier also said the newly redeveloped centre was now able to offer recreational opportunities to people who had traditionally found accessing the pool physically difficult.
"The special access ramp, the only one of its kind in WA, will have a significant impact on physical activity rates in the community," he said.
"Seniors and the disabled will now have the freedom to enter and exit the pool with minimal assistance, which makes it an attractive recreational choice and an important rehabilitation tool."
The Premier also hailed the project as an excellent example of both the State and local governments working together to provide relevant facilities.
