The search is on for the brightest Year Seven students in regional Western Australia.
Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich said applications for places in the 2006 public school Academic Talent Programs would close on April 8.
Ms Ravlich said talented country students in Years Eight to Ten could study advanced Internet-based programs in mathematics, science and humanities without leaving home, through ATP Online.
"More than 100 students are enrolled in online programs in 40 country schools across WA," the Minister said.
"These students participate from their local school as part of their normal timetable.
"A computer, an Internet service and two phone lines are provided to the students' schools.
"Lessons take place via web-based software and four one-hour conference lessons each week, which enable contact with specialist teachers in small groups.
"The challenging curriculum and opportunities to work on-line with similarly gifted students bring real benefits for participants."
Ms Ravlich said the Government gave a strong priority to promoting academic achievement in the public school system.
"Our aim is to improve the quality of public education services for all Western Australians, wherever they live," she said.
"We have committed additional staff and resources to raise academic standards at all schools, as well as improving our provision for gifted and talented students.
"We will provide a new boarding facility for country students attending Perth Modern School, which is being developed as a centre for academic excellence.
"The facility will also cater for regional students enrolled in other schools offering programs in areas such as dance, music, visual arts and languages."
Ms Ravlich said students applying for the program would be required to sit aptitude tests in the week commencing May 9.
All students who sat for the selection tests would receive an individual report and based on the results of the tests, students might then be offered a place in the program.
The Minister urged parents to nominate their children for Gifted and Talented Education programs using application forms available at their schools, via the website: http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/gifttal or by calling 08 9264 4235.
