Residents choose facilities over open space in Scarborough SHS survey
23/7/01
The State Government will allocate 30 per cent of the Scarborough Senior High School site as open space following a strong community vote in favour of facilities.
Scarborough residents have shown a strong preference for an open swimming pool and multi-purpose courts on the former high school site, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today.
A total of 1,889 respondents from groups and households within the catchment area of the former Scarborough Senior High School cast their vote on options for use of the site.
The 30 per cent open space option attracted 51.1 per cent of votes.
The 41.5 per cent space option was supported by 22.5 per cent of voters and the maximum space option (50 per cent open space) was the choice of 26.4 per cent of voters.
"The 100 per cent open space action group was obviously not representative of the majority," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Scarborough households have voted for a balance between open space and facilities.
"The preferred option means 70 per cent of the land will be sold for residential development, leaving 30 per cent for public open space.
"A total of $3.8 million will be spent at the former high school site and we will be working with the local council to find the best way to deliver these facilities to the public.
"Unlike its predecessor, this Government has gone to the community and given it a direct voice in helping decide the future use of the site and location of the community infrastructure.
"It is imperative that $10.5 million from the land sale is allocated to capital works in other schools to benefit all Western Australians."
Now the community has made its choice, LandCorp will purchase the land and begin developing the site.
