Roe Highway Stage 6 signed off

A contract awarded today ensures the next stage of Roe Highway between Nicholson Road and South Street will be completed by mid-2004.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said joint venture Transfield MacMahon has been awarded a $28.7million contract to design and construct Roe Highway between Nicholson Road and South Street (Stage 6).
Ms MacTiernan said the project was possible due to a funding partnership between the Federal and State Governments.
"The Commonwealth is providing $76million towards a $187million project to construct Stages 4 - 7 of Roe Highway between Welshpool Road and the Kwinana Freeway," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Without this level of commitment from the Federal Government, the project would rely solely on State funding and would not have been completed as soon as it will be.
"Both the State Government and the Federal Government recognise the importance of Roe Highway being completed to Kwinana Freeway as soon as possible.
"The connection to the freeway will provide for traffic, particularly freight movements, travelling to and from growing industrial and residential areas in the south-west corridor. It will reduce pressure on existing roads in built-up areas.
"This is an important part of the Government's strategy to reduce the impact of freight traffic in Perth's southern suburbs."
Ms MacTiernan said Stage 6 of Roe Highway included 4.5km of dual carriageway, interchanges at Willeri Drive and South Street, pedestrian and cyclist facilities and traffic improvements at the intersections of Willeri Drive/Collins Road and Willeri Drive/Bannister Road.
The extension would improve access to and from the industrial areas of Canning Vale, Kewdale and Welshpool.
Construction work on Stage 6 is expected to start in January 2003, with completion scheduled by mid-2004. Stage 4 will be completed by the end of this year and Stage 5 by mid-2003. Stage 7, due to commence in 2004, will complete a link between Midland and the Kwinana Freeway.
A committee chaired by Riverton MLA Tony McRae, in conjunction with the local councils and communities, will examine ways of minimising impacts on local roads as each stage opens and the next begins construction.
Mr McRae applauded the contract announcement for Stage 6 saying that it was an essential link to protect the amenity of the Riverton community and enhance the economic engine-room at Canning Vale.
