Sale of the Pemberton Sawmill
4/04/03
State Development Minister Clive Brown announced today the successful sale of the Pemberton Sawmill from Sotico Pty Ltd to Auswest Timbers Pty Ltd.
The State Government-assisted sale will have a number of positive benefits for the community, including the retention of an operating karri sawmill in Pemberton with associated employment for 57 people.
Under the deal, 42 of the historic timber cottages owned by Sotico will be sold to private buyers with preferences and incentives given to past and present mill workers.
Mr Brown handed over a $2.53million cheque to Gary Addison of Auswest Timbers, to assist in the sale, conditional upon the achievement of certain milestones over the coming years especially in terms of employment outcomes for the town.
In addition, an agreement has been entered into to ensure contamination associated with the mill site and nearby ponds is assessed and remedied with joint responsibility being met by Sotico, Hawker Siddeley and the Government - owners of the mill at various times in its history.
