Scholarship program invests in youth skills and jobs
26/7/02
Forty-two young people aged 19 to 24 years from across the State have received an apprenticeship or traineeship scholarship linked to a job placement under the State Government's new Apprenticeship and Traineeship Scholarship Program.
Of the 42 scholarships awarded, 17 were apprenticeships and 25 were traineeships.
Four apprenticeships and two traineeships were awarded in the metropolitan area and the remainder in regional areas.
Training Minister John Kobelke said the Government was contributing $1,000 to each apprentice and $500 to each trainee to assist with training costs. The scholarships were an investment in the State's future.
"Skills shortages are looming in a range of Western Australian industries unless more young people are trained as apprentices and trainees," Mr Kobelke said.
"People who have completed an apprenticeship or traineeship are the ones who will maintain a skills base in these industries and could one day possibly lead them.
"Employers like these who have provided job placements to all the scholarship winners, and thousands of others, are the backbone of our economy and should be commended for their commitment to training young Western Australians."
