Two of Western Australia's most remote communities have been linked, following works to seal and upgrade 25km of road at Cape Leveque, in the State's far North-West.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today officially opened the new road between the Lombadina - Djarindjin Community and the One Arm Point Community with a ribbon cutting ceremony on site, adjacent to the Lombadina Airstrip.
"The works are part of a $10.2million seven-year State Government plan to seal the entire Broome - Cape Leveque Road, which is 200km in length," Ms MacTiernan said.
"They are in addition to works completed in 2002, where 48km of the Broome - Cape Leveque Road was upgraded in the vicinity of Beagle Bay.
"The project is an important pre-election commitment we made to those communities in 2000."
The Minister said the works were underpinned by the Gallop Government's ability to properly manage the State's finances and deliver balanced budgets since coming to office.
Kimberley MLA Carol Martin said sealing the road had provided improved access to the all-weather airstrip for the One Arm Point and Lombadina - Djarindjin Communities.
"It will also minimise the isolation of these communities during the wet season," Ms Martin said.

The Broome - Cape Leveque Road, which is approximately 200km long, runs from the outskirts of Broome to Cape Leveque on the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula. It services a number of Aboriginal communities, tourist destinations, and several commercial ventures.
While the road is a local government road under the control of the Shire of Broome, the State Government has committed $10.2million over a seven-year period to assist in upgrading the road.
As part of this commitment, Main Roads is providing the project and construction management for the project.
The project has been broken into four stages:

  • Stage 1a (2004, completed September 2004) - 25km of sealed road construction linking the communities of Lombadina, Djarindjin and One Arm Point to an all-weather sealed airstrip adjacent to the Broome to Cape Leveque Road. The works included construction of sealed access to these communities.
  • Stage 1b (future years) - 33km of road construction from Lombadina/Djarindjin Community turnoff to the northern boundary of Beagle Bay.
  • Stage 2 (completed 2002) - 48km of construction complete to an unsealed standard between Carnot Bay turnoff and the northern boundary of Beagle Bay.
  • Stage 3 (future years) - 89km of unsealed road construction from Carnot Bay turnoff to the end of the bitumen to the south.
Ms MacTiernan said Main Roads was progressing the planning, preconstruction and construction activities required to upgrade further sections of the road in line with funding availability.
