The Seniors Recreation Council of WA will expand its services State-wide with a funding grant of $151,000 from the Lotteries Commission of Western Australia.
Seniors' Minister Sheila McHale said the grant recognised the role the Seniors Recreation Council played in improving the quality of life for older Western Australians.
"With its ethos of 'healthy ageing through activity', the Seniors Recreation Council has brought life and meaning to thousands of senior Western Australians by promoting events and functions that stimulate physical, mental and social wellbeing," Ms McHale said.
"Its work complements the State Government's $6million physical activity campaign which encourages Western Australians to participate in moderate, regular exercise to increase wellbeing and reduce health care costs."
Established in 1992, the Seniors Recreation Council is an umbrella support group for sporting organisations and clubs throughout WA with branches in Esperance, Peel and Kalgoorlie, as well as a presence in Albany through the Over Fifties Club. It is run by volunteers and relies on funding and sponsorship for its operations.
The Seniors Recreation Council's activities include the popular Have a Go Day at Burswood, Seniors Impact Days at shopping centres, an annual ball and the publication of 'Add Life to Your Years' directory of sporting and related seniors' clubs.
Ms McHale said the funding would help the Seniors Recreation Council to set up more branches across the State including Geraldton, the Pilbara and Karratha/Port Hedland regions.
"The Seniors Recreation Council has put forward a structure and vision that will enable many more of WA's 286,000 plus seniors to actively participate in the community, improve their social networks and enjoy life," she said.
The Seniors Recreation Council is one of many organisations that benefit from the Lotteries Commission of WA's grants program.
Last financial year the Lotteries Commission returned a record $134.7million to the WA community, including more than $45million distributed in direct grants.
