Western Australia's first Waterwise Display Village is being developed within the Settlers Hill Estate at Baldivis.
Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths said the Stockland Property Group and the Water Corporation had signed an agreement to equip 12 houses with the latest waterwise appliances and landscaping designs, ensuring significant water savings at the homes into the future.
Mr Griffiths launched the Waterwise Display Village concept in August last year and urged land developers to continue to promote the on-going campaign to conserve the State's water supplies.
Companies which participated in the program received a range of marketing and promotional support initiatives from the Water Corporation.
"The Settlers Hill Estate has proved to be one of the most popular display villages in WA," the Minister said.
"This agreement between the developer and the Water Corporation means future development will embrace the waterwise village principles.
"The developer has shown leadership in becoming the first to work with the corporation to show in a very tangible way how water efficiency can be built into new villages.
"The first 12 homes are part of an eventual new 2,100-lot development at Settlers Hill Estate which will include four waterwise gardens featuring reticulation and landscape designs based on water efficiency principles."
Mr Griffiths said while Stockland was the first developer to take on the program, it had received an enthusiastic response from the industry with an expected 10 display villages set to join in by June 2004.
The Waterwise Display Village is part of a family of programs introduced by the Corporation which includes waterwise plumbers, irrigators and garden centres.
Eventually, the objective is that every new home built in WA will contain waterwise components.
"In the longer term there will be significant water savings and householders will also save money from these initiatives," the Minister said.
