Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths has approved a conditional contract for the purchase of the recently completed Shenton Village complex on the Nicholson Road site of the former Shenton Park Hotel.
Announcing the pending acquisition of the 66-unit complex, Mr Griffiths said the decision was driven by a strong demand for seniors' housing in inner city Perth.
"The Government's provision of more affordable accommodation for seniors close to support facilities such as hospitals, has been solidly supported by the City of Subiaco," the Minister said.
"Seniors' housing accords with the original intent of the unit complex and the terms of the council's development approval. The location is well served for shopping, community and health facilities, and public transport."
The Director-General of the Department of Housing and Works, Greg Joyce, said the complex, which included the refurbished former hotel building, was being bought from a receiver/manager of a private retirement village development.

It consisted of three one-bedroom units, 50 two-bedroom units and 13 three-bedroom units, with the former hotel providing 22 rooms.
Mr Joyce said his department would seek to use the former hotel for special needs accommodation and would consult with the City of Subiaco as to its future utility.
The units with three bedrooms would be used to house seniors who could be carers of a disabled child, or had requirements for extra space to accommodate medical needs including, perhaps, items of medical equipment and aids.
Mr Joyce said there were significant applicants in those categories already on the department's waiting list.
