Signing of urban renewal agreement for Maddington and Kenwick

The Maddington Kenwick Sustainable Communities Partnership Agreement between the State Government and the City of Gosnells would break new ground in urban renewal in Western Australia, Premier Geoff Gallop said today.
Signing the partnership agreement with City of Gosnells Mayor Pat Morris, Dr Gallop said the project would provide a benchmark for similar developments across the State.
"Empowering local communities to create a new future for their suburb or town is a high priority for this Government," the Premier said.
"The suburbs of Maddington and Kenwick face a range of issues which are common to middle ring suburbs in cities and regional centres throughout Australia.
"This ground-breaking project sets a new course and the Government will use it as a benchmark for the sustainable renewal of urban communities throughout the State.
"We are confident that many declining urban centres can be revitalised through more effective planning and design, along with improvements to local infrastructure and the development of partnerships between government, community and the business sector."
Dr Gallop said the Maddington Kenwick project was consistent with the State Sustainability Strategy, the first comprehensive sustainability blueprint released by any Australian State or Territory Government.
The project uses a sustainability framework that seeks to address issues at the social, economic and physical or built levels.
The partnership agreement will be implemented in two phases. The first phase involves establishing a community vision.
"Community participation will play a big part in the direction of this project," the Premier said.
"I encourage local people to get involved and have their say about how they want to see their suburbs revitalised."
Dr Gallop commended the City of Gosnells for the enthusiasm and resources it had committed to the fledgling renewal project and Roleystone MLA Martin Whitely, who had co-ordinated the State Government's involvement in the project.
The Premier said he was looking forward to the next stages of the project in Maddington and Kenwick.
