A pilot HYPE program to address anti-social behaviour in South Hedland is now working more effectively according to Pilbara Minister Tom Stephens.
Last night Mr Stephens accompanied 'Mingle Mob' youth workers on a patrol near South Hedland Shopping Centre and today he met with representatives of the organisations supporting the project.
"The Mingle Mob identifies young people who are at risk and then works with them and their families to address anti-social behaviour and access appropriate support," he said.
"The youth workers will also organise sports and activities as part of their program.
"I am told that the Mingle Mob's methods have been relevant and successful in deterring repeat behaviour."
Mr Stephens said Government agencies under the leadership of the Department for Community Development, local police, the Town of Port Hedland and shopping centre security were working together to support the Mingle Mob.
Hedland's Youth Involvement Council now managed the HYPE program.
"No one agency or group can deal with these problems, so it is heartening to see the strength of commitment to making this program work," the Minister said.
"I should also compliment the many Hedland community members who are contributing to the progress that is now being made.
"Because of some initial difficulties, the pilot program, which began in June 2003 will be extended to June 2004.
"This will enable the Mingle Mob to develop strategies to deal with the flare ups in anti-social behaviour which are usual during school holidays."
Mr Stephens said the HYPE project, was jointly funded by the Pilbara Development Commission (PDC), BHP Billiton, DCD, the Town of Port Hedland, South Hedland Shopping Centre, and ATSIC.
