Work has begun on the $20 million Southern Harbour, the second half of Mandurah Ocean Marina.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the new development would feature a network of waterways lined with apartments, shops and family homes.
Ms MacTiernan said the project would add to the positive impact that the Marina had already had on employment and investment in Mandurah.
Features of Southern Harbour - which is being planned by the State Government's land development agency, LandCorp - include:

  • more than three kilometres of waterfront available to the public for a variety of leisure activities, including boating, fishing and walking;
  • more than 50 per cent public open space, including boardwalks, piazzas and viewing points;
  • inter-connected waterways for use by small craft;
  • a range of home sites and mixed use lots that will foster a vibrant community atmosphere;
  • a 35-chalet holiday park targeted at families; and
  • bridges for cars and pedestrians, ample parking and an elevated pedestrian bridge, linking the northern and southern harbours and providing spectacular views.
"Southern Harbour is designed to be pedestrian-friendly and it will further strengthen the marina's links with Mandurah's existing cultural, retail and recreational precincts, so the benefits will flow throughout the community," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Mandurah Ocean Marina represents a major investment in the future of Mandurah and the Peel Region by the State Government, with development costs expected to total $50million.
"The first stage has been an outstanding success, with the marina area abuzz with activity, strong demand for residential and commercial lots and overwhelmingly positive feedback from the local community.
"When completed, the marina is expected to create 400 jobs and an estimated $61million in tourism over five years. That is $8.5million more than LandCorp's initial plan for the marina.
"Latest figures estimate that 255,000 new overnight visitors and more than 690,000 new day trippers will be attracted over five years and the marina will also help local tourism operators to target the coach and conference markets.
"When the 48-minute, direct rail link between Mandurah and Perth is completed in 2006, these numbers can be expected to grow even further."
Ms MacTiernan said that following completion of bulk earthworks, construction of the waterways, roads, paths and services was expected to start in June and take between nine and 12 months.
