Specially built new train a tourism boost to Rottnest Island
9/11/03
Visitors to Rottnest Island will be able to travel in style to the magnificent historical site of Oliver Hill, with the launch today of a new train on the island.
Tourism Minister Bob Kucera said the train would provide a wonderful new tourist attraction for Rottnest Island.
"Many people come to the island for the beautiful beaches and great bike rides, and now the new train will let visitors explore it from a different vantage point," Mr Kucera said.
"More than 500,000 visitors spend their holidays at Rottnest Island each year and this train, named the Captain Hussey, will provide a link to the island's history, which adds to the holiday experience.
"Trains are a significant part of Rottnest's history, as it was once the only form of transport on the island and the railway was originally built to enable the movement of the heavy guns and equipment to Oliver Hill when it was the first line of defence for Western Australia in World War II.
"The Captain Hussey has capacity for 64 people and two wheelchairs, and driving position at both ends of the train. Visitors will now receive a running commentary from the train driver on the history and highlights of the island as they take the 30-minute train trip up to Oliver Hill."
The Captain Hussey will depart from Main Settlement Railway Station to Oliver Hill five times daily over the summer period.
Oliver Hill is a significant Military Heritage icon, containing two massive 9.2-inch battery guns. These guns were installed in 1937 as the first line of defence for WA. The intention was for them to engage hostile ships well before they approached the mainland. However, the guns were never fired in anger, and now serve as a popular tourist attraction, along with the underground combat tunnels.
The train has been named Captain Hussey in recognition of the late Engineer-in-Chief (Brigadier Frank Hussey), who managed the installation of the guns in 1937. His rank during his time on the island was captain.
The train was specially built by GEMCO Rail, with help from a number of dedicated volunteers and the support of the Public Transport Authority.
