Sports associations warned about HIH Insurance collapse

Sport and Recreation Minister Alan Carpenter has urged all Western Australians sports associations to assess their insurance liability policies in the wake of the HIH Insurance collapse.
Mr Carpenter said some sports bodies could unwittingly find themselves without liability and other insurance cover.
"Many organisations take out insurance cover through brokers and therefore may not be aware with which company they are covered," he said.
"It is crucial that all sports associations check the state of their policies as a matter of urgency to ensure they are not exposed.
"The sports industry is often exposed to third party and indemnity insurance claims through staging events and competitions and even during training.
"Sport simply cannot operate without appropriate insurance cover and the consequences of being exposed to risk could be catastrophic."
Mr Carpenter said Sport and Recreation WA has advised all WA sports associations of the need for them, and their stakeholders, to check their insurance cover.
