The State Government and the City of Rockingham have committed to working together to implement the Government's vision for a rapid transit system joining Rockingham with the new South-West railway between Mandurah and Perth, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today.
At a meeting last night, Ms MacTiernan and City of Rockingham representatives agreed to work jointly to implement Cabinet's decision to develop a rapid transit network which will link the new Rockingham station with the city's key features.
"Rather than the new alignment closing off any options, the implementation of a complementary rapid transit system will allow Rockingham to develop its premier assets, particularly its magnificent ocean foreshore," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Rapid transit alternatives to be considered include the latest in guided buses and light rail technology."
Ms MacTiernan said one of the key decisions of last night's meeting was that a taskforce would be established to examine the best routes and the most appropriate technology for linking Rockingham station with the city centre and the Murdoch University campus, as well as the foreshore.
She said the taskforce would consist of representatives from the new Department of Planning and Infrastructure and the City of Rockingham and would be jointly chaired by local members of Parliament Mark McGowan MLA and Norm Marlborough, MLA.
The terms of reference would include the need for provision for extensive consultation with local residents.

"Last night's meeting with Rockingham's Mayor, Chris Elliott, Deputy Mayor, Barry Sammels and the chief executive officer, Gary Holland, was constructive and positive," the Minister said.
"Although the city had originally expressed disappointment at the Government's decision not to bring the new railway into Rockingham, they have now agreed that a rapid transit system link can offer great benefits.
"The Government recognises the importance of Rockingham as a strategic regional centre and as a destination in its own right.
"The combination of a fast direct rail service into Perth complemented with a local rapid transit system will see Rockingham really take off."
