A $20,000 Waste Management and Recycling Fund grant to develop waste auditor training will improve the quality of information available on commercial and industrial waste streams, Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards said today.
Dr Edwards said the training would be provided by Waste Audit and Consultancy Services, in conjunction with Eccell WA Pty Ltd.
"The nationally accredited waste auditor training program will be available to both appropriate local government officers and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) staff," she said.
"Run over three days, the training will ensure that officers conducting audits are consistent in their methodology, and that the data collected on waste composition is comparable and valid."
Dr Edwards said Waste Audit and Consultancy Services and Eccell WA would meet with the DEP to finalise the training program before its commencement.
"By equipping participants with the tools to gather accurate information about commercial and industrial waste, the development of regional waste and recycling strategies will be possible," she said.
"In particular, the training will provide officers with the skills to establish a database of waste composition information that is both accurate and current."
Dr Edwards said waste audits could identify opportunities to divert waste from landfill, and improve the waste management systems of commercial and industrial businesses.
"In addition, the collection of good and reliable information on a regular basis will enable recycling companies to better meet the service needs of businesses," she said.
The Minister said the Waste Management and Recycling Fund collected almost $5million from the landfill levy each year, which was used to sponsor waste reduction and recycling activities throughout the State.
About $8.7million in grants has been paid to community groups, businesses and local governments since the fund was established.
