State Government heritage lists Gloucester Park

Perth's oldest harness racing venue, Gloucester Park, has been interim listed in the State Government's Register of Heritage Places.
Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards said the heritage listing recognised the unique social and historical qualities of the park.
"Gloucester Park has been a major venue for social gatherings in Perth since 1929, and is the oldest and only remaining purpose-built harness racing ground in Perth," Dr Edwards said.
"It is highly valued by the WA Trotting Association and members of the wider public for the social and cultural events that have taken place at the venue over the past 70 years.
"The main entrance on Nelson Crescent and the Waterloo Crescent arched entrance are valued for their fine Free Classical detailing and impressive scale.
"The enclosure totalisator and leger totalisator at Gloucester Park were the first automatic mechanical calculating devices to be installed in Australia. The totalisators are rare examples in Western Australia as they are no longer built.
"Together, the main entrance and totalisators make Gloucester Park a landmark in Perth which contributes to the community's sense of place."
The Minister said the trotting track and main entrance retained a high level of authenticity, but due to redevelopment in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s some principal characteristics of Gloucester Park such as the original stands, stalls and tearooms had been lost.
Dr Edwards said it was important that places of State heritage significance be recognised and conserved for the community and future generations.
