State Government heritage lists Weld Club, Perth

One of Western Australia's most prestigious gentleman's clubs, the Weld Club in Perth, has been permanently listed in the State Government's Register of Heritage Places.
Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards said the heritage listing recognised the unique social and historical qualities of the place.
"The Weld Club is widely regarded as a leading private gentleman's club, which has been in continuous use for more than 130 years," Dr Edwards said.
"The Weld Club was founded in 1871 and when it opened its own premises in 1892, nearly all the members of both the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly were club members.
"It is historically significant in reflecting a time in WA's colonial history when political and social power rested in the hands of a very few.
"Club admission was a mark of social respectability and status.
"The landmark building is part of a precinct of 19th century buildings, which made up the administrative and social core of colonial Perth."
Dr Edwards said the Federation Queen Anne-style building was a good example of the work of prominent architect Sir Talbot Hobbs designed to accommodate members' meeting, recreation and short-term residential requirements.
