State Government moves to boost food and beverage exports

State Development Minister Clive Brown today launched three publications designed to boost food and beverage exports from Western Australia.
Speaking at Fremantle Harbour, Mr Brown said the publications would greatly assist the State Government to reach its goal of doubling the number of WA exporters by 2006.
"The Gallop Government is committed to creating new jobs and opportunities in WA's export industries by doubling the number of WA exporters by 2006," he said.
"The food and beverage industry has experienced strong growth in recent years and the State Government has recognised the enormous potential for export growth within this sector.
"The three publications I am launching today are an important part of the Government's strategy to boost exports and are designed to assist food and beverage producers, big and small, at every stage of the export process."
The three publications launched by the Minister were:

• the 'Guide to Producing Retail Ready Food and Beverage Products' - to assist companies who have small operations to understand the requirements of retailers;

• a 'Guide to Exporting Food and Beverage Products' - to assist food and beverage companies to understand the export process and who to contact for assistance; and

• 'Retails Buyers Catalogue' - as a promotional tool to help retail buyers at all levels identify WA food and beverage products available for retail sale.

Mr Brown said the three publications would improve an already strong export industry.
"Total agricultural, fisheries, food and beverage exports from WA in 2001-02 totalled $4.37billion, or 14 per cent of all exports," he said.
"Processed food and beverage exports, which include wine, dairy, smallgoods and gourmet foods, grew from $542million in 1991-92 to $918million in 2001-02, with this growth the key driver behind broader industry growth.
"The publications released today are designed to further boost exports in these areas and lead to greater jobs and opportunities throughout the food and beverage industry."
