State Development Minister Clive Brown today welcomed news that Hamersley Iron had approved the expansion of both its Dampier Port and Yandicoogina mine operations, subject to the proposals achieving all necessary Government approvals.
The $1.2billion expansion program will see the Dampier Port increase its iron ore capacity from 74 million tonnes to 116 million tonnes per annum. The Yandicoogina mine expansion will see production increase from 24 million tonnes to 36 million tonnes per annum.
Mr Brown said Hamersley Iron's expansion plans would further strengthen Western Australia's reputation as Australia's leading State economy.
"Hamersley Iron's expansion plans represent another significant investment in WA's resources sector and build upon the ongoing expansion in the State's gas, gas processing, iron ore processing and alumina industries," he said.
"I welcome Hamersley Iron's decision and will continue to work with the company as it seeks remaining Government approvals for its expansion plans."
