State War Memorial returns to former glory

The re-dedication ceremony of the State War Memorial at Kings Park later today will mark a significant milestone in the history of the prominent Perth landmark, according to Premier Geoff Gallop.
The Premier will be officiating at the re-dedication, which recognises the extensive restoration work that has been undertaken at the memorial.
"I thank the RSL for inviting me to the occasion, which will celebrate the return of the memorial to its former glory," Dr Gallop said.
"The restoration work was announced in March last year, after a State Government study found that water seepage was causing significant structural problems, including corrosion to steel reinforcements.
"It was determined that only a complete overhaul, including total reconstruction of the obelisk, would ensure that the memorial would be preserved well into the future.
"My Government is committed to protecting Western Australia's unique features and lifestyle and that is why we provided $445,000 towards the restoration project."
The Premier thanked the Federal Government for making the project viable by matching the State Government contribution.
"These memorials help remind us of the great sacrifices made by WA men and women in wartime," he said.
The State War Memorial was built in 1929 to commemorate WA's centenary year.
