Students challenged to design postcards of WA
23/9/02
School students will compete to 'design a postcard' to promote Perth and country attractions, Tourism Minister Clive Brown announced today.
He said the competition aimed to educate Western Australians about the value of tourism to the State's economy, workforce and the cultural and natural environment.
School children aged eight to 16 would be asked to design a postcard that featured one city and one country destination they thought first-time visitors to Western Australia would most like to see.
Value of tourism facts would be incorporated into the two winning designs. Printed as postcards, they would be given away at conferences, libraries, on Skywest flights, at cafes and restaurants, selected hotels, and at the WA Visitor Centre in Forrest Place, Perth Airport, the Art Gallery and Perth attractions.
Competition winners would also receive prizes from Skywest, Best Western Hotels and Perth retailers.
"The competition promotes the value of tourism, both to the city and regional WA," Mr Brown said.
"It will encourage our school children to think about why WA is such a popular tourist destination and what makes it unique.
"It will create State pride and knowledge in our young people and build awareness in those who use the postcards.
"I would like to see all levels of Government and the school community get behind this important value of tourism initiative."
Mr Brown said tourism was the State's fourth largest industry - worth more than $11million a day to WA.
"The direct and flow-on benefits of tourism touch all Western Australians," he said.
"It provides 80,000 jobs throughout the State and supports many regional communities."
Details of the competition are available in the West Australian from Tuesday, September 24 and on http://www.westernaustralia.net or http://www.perth.wa.gov.au
The competition closes October 21, 2002. Winners will be published in
The West Australian in November.
